Dr. Andrea Gershon awarded American Thoracic Society Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Andrea Gershon, respirologist and scientist at Sunnybrook, has been awarded the Behavioral Science and Health Services Research Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 American Thoracic Society (ATS) Assembly Awards. This award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding research contributions in the study of lung diseases, critical illness, or sleep disorders.

Dr. Gershon’s award-winning research and knowledge translation program uses ‘Big Data’ to learn from the real-world experiences of people living with lung disease with a focus on vulnerable groups. Her clinical studies evaluate the use of remote monitoring and wearables in people with respiratory disease. She is currently leading a national, multicentre study on the respiratory effects of long COVID. Her work aims to optimize care and health outcomes for people living with respiratory disease.

Dr. Gershon has published over 230 peer-reviewed articles. She has been an invited speaker at international meetings, universities, and medical centres worldwide. Her work is used by government and non-profit organizations to inform local and international guidelines and policy.

The ATS is the world’s leading medical society dedicated to the advancement of global respiratory health and the ATS Assembly Awards recognize leaders in the pulmonary, critical care and sleep health fields. Dr. Gershon’s research in respiratory conditions has not only influenced systems of care, but has had a profound impact on patient-outcomes and quality of life.
